| Teens dish about best reads using online resource - Abbotsford News Posted: 03 Dec 2009 03:26 PM PST Riley van der Linden has already written seven book reviews this year. And that doesn't count school assignments. The Grade 8 St. Margaret's School student has been using TeenRC – Teen Reading Club – since summer 2008 and is hooked on its mandate of being teen-fed and teen-led. "It's not formal, so I can express everything freely, rather than worry about how my teachers are going to think," she said. More than 4,000 teens across Canada, including 139 from Greater Victoria, post book reviews, comment on other reviews and suggest books for their peers to read in the online forum, at www.teenrc.ca. While the site is most active during the summer break, when kids aren't bogged down by homework and book reports, there are fresh posts during the school year as well. "It's really busy. The kids on there are really active," said Tracy Kendrick, co-ordinator for children's and teens' services at Central Library in Victoria. "It continues to grow and kids are getting more and more involved." TeenRC is geared toward 13- to 18-year-olds and has forums for book topics from chick-lit to queer lit and horror to sci-fi. Librarians and staff of the Greater Victoria Public Library oversee posts on the site, but teen contributors can act as moderators, too. "It's a great opportunity for the teens to get some volunteer skills," Kendrick said. "It's really important to have teen moderators because it keeps it more relevant to the other kids. It's a safe, welcoming, friendly place to be." Van der Linden put it another way. "I thought it was cool," she said. "I started reading the reviews and found a bunch of books I never knew about." TeenRC differs from a trip to the library because it offers advice from people with the same interests and age group, she said. ecardone@vicnews.com v2This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |

This article was picked up by the Lariat Online at Baylor University. I was amused. It has a dateline of Dayton and my byline at the New York Times. I'm not kidding. This is a thought provoking piece. To read it click HERE: Permalink | Comments (4) | Post your comment | Categories: booms and busts This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
