"My Mother the Cheerleader"

by Robert Sharenow

HarperTeen, 2009, 320 pages, $8.99

Recommended for ages 13 and up.

When desegregation begins in New Orleans, Louise is pulled out of school and her mother joins the Cheerleaders, a group of local women who gather every morning to heckle 6-year-old Ruby Bridges, the first African-American student at William Frantz Elementary. Readers will be held fast by the history told from the inside as adult Louise remembers the vicious role of ordinary people.  Excellent read for Black History Month.

For adult readers

"Throw Out Fifty Things: Clear the Clutter, Find Your Life"

by Gail Blanke

Springboard Press, 2009, 270 pages, $19.99

If you need inspiration to attack piles of clutter in your life or feel stuck by mental baggage weighing you down, this book may hold the key to helping you move forward. Gail Blanke is a world-class motivator who offers simple, effective solutions to rid your life of all forms of clutter. She starts by taking you through each room of the house, ridding your life of old un-needed, unused and unloved items and then works her way to the mental clutter (regrets, mistakes, fears and worries and more).  Following her system is deceptively simple, yet very beneficial. Highly recommended.

— Lori Sugden, Reference Librarian, Zauel Library

"Good Eats: The Early Years"

by Alton Brown

Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 395 pages, $37.50

Those who already enjoy the program "Good Eats" on the Food Network know that Brown combines a whimsical sense of humor with an educator's love for the science and history of foods and food preparation. In this book, the first 80 episodes of the series are recreated in print, including the recipes, sample graphics from the show, and the educational content, some of which will appeal to trivia fans.  For example, did you know that the "ears" on early American corn were even smaller than the cocktail corn Tom Hanks tried to eat in the movie "Big"? Great recipes, great fun!

Managing Hispanic and Latino Employees

Louis Navaer (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, $24.95)

Some business owners and managers expect Hispanic employees to "fit in" by learning American ways.

While Americans see work as a way to build their lives and careers, Hispanics see it as the way to provide for their extended families.

Americans prize ambition, individual achievement, self-expression and, truth be told, workaholism. Hispanics, while hard workers, look at life differently. Their culture binds itself around family, tradition, respect for authority and humility. Americans grapple with work/life balance; Hispanics deal with life/work balance.

Hispanic workers value courtesy and sometimes avoid confrontation. They may not speak up when dealing with problems out of respect.

To ensure effective communication, managers and co-workers would do well to learn Spanish. Remember the first rule of presentations: "If you want to be understood, speak the language of your audience."

Monday Morning Motivation

David Cottrell (Harper Business, $21.99)

Albert Einstein's theory of relativity forms the basis for David Cottrell's view of 21st century leadership. E represents organizational energy. M represents mass – the employees. C represents the conductors that transmit energy and the squaring effect of leadership energy.

The five conductors he identifies are:

Synchronization. If you want to energize people, keep the message simple and focused every day.

Speed. When employees understand goals, priorities and customers, good decisions can be made at all levels of the organization.

Communication. Information must flow freely up, down and sideways.

Customer passion. Employees need to know everything about your products and services.

Integrity. Measure actions and decisions with a one-inch ruler: "Is this the right thing to do?" Right doesn't change with quarterly earnings.
