Book Reviews - News Slashdot

Posted: 12 Dec 2009 05:14 AM PST

You'd need to implement something like that in a hierarchical manner, not unlike slashdot. The number of submissions would dramatically increase due to its free nature while the quality would surely decline, and nobody wants to sit there and read a large percentage of questionable work to determine if it's valid and if so if the results are correct. New submissions could be subject to quick reviews for validity testing (with moderation of course, people who troll by negatively reviewing and voting down new papers without actually reading them or considering their results, or for any bias should be barred from such reviews), and once a paper has been verified it can move on to a stage where people who don't want to sift through garbage to find the gold can really scrutinize them and see if they stand up.

Why not make such a website?:)

Book reviews: Should I include them or not? - Examiner

    Posted: 12 Dec 2009 04:52 AM PST

This is a brief piece meant to pique the interest of fellow readers; those who like me are voraciously devouring what is new and what is not in an attempt to become either more knowledgeable or less stupid (like me.) Over the course of my life, I have read over 8500 books (averaging twenty-six years of reading at 28 books a month.) and currently own a library consisting of over 1200 books, including Science Fiction, Religious, Historical, Fantasy, Action, Detective Fiction, Non-Fiction, Text Books and more. Though a bit of a curse I have learned to read faster and retain more, resulting in a unwinnable situation in which I tend to spend more on my books than on any other hobby. So now, I write and use that knowledge gained over the course of my life to reference throughout what I write.

I ask you all if I should in fact begin doing book reviews for the discerning Libertarian; you know those books that apply directly or indirectly to the cause of freedom and our pursuit of a better life? A short list of books follows I have found them to be important over time to both my life and growth as an adult but also to my changes politically.

    1. Messages and Papers of the Presidents 1789-1897 (James D. Richardson) Pub. 1897
    2. Sketches of the Life, Writings, and Opinions of Thomas Jefferson (B. L. Rayner) Pub. 1833
    3. Common Sense (Thomas Paine) Pub. 1776 – my version is a bit later but not much.
    4. The Federalist Papers (Roy Fairfield) pub. 1961
    5. Constitutional Law and Politics (O'Brien) this is a textbook and has several variations.)
    6. Outrage (Dick Morris) 2007
    7. Guns, Crime, and Freedom (Wayne La'Pierre) pub. 1994
    8. The Quotable Founding Fathers (Buckner Melton jr.) Pub. 2004
    9. Common Sense (Glenn Beck) Pub. 2009
    10. The Blue and the Grey (Henry Commager) 1982
    11. America- Watching (Gerald Johnson) 1976
    12. Citizen Warriors – Americas National Guard and Reserve Forces& the politics of National Security (Stephen Duncan) 1997
    13. Benjamin Franklin- An American Life (Walter Isaacson) 2003
    14. Animal Farm (George Orwell) 1956
    15. Nineteen Eighty Four (George Orwell)
    16. Inside the Whale and other essays (George Orwell)
    17. Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand)
    18. Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal (Ayn Rand)
    19. The Third Option (Vince Flynn)
    20. State of Fear (Michael Crichton)
    21. Ender's Shadow (Orson Scott Card)
    22. Time out of Mind (John Maxim)
    23. Point of Impact (Stephen Hunter)
    24. Foundation "Trilogy" (Isaac Asimov)
    25. Rama "Trilogy" (Arthur C. Clarke)
    26. The AI War (Stephen Ames Berry)
    27. The Truth about Self Protection (Massad Ayoob)
    28. Heaven (Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen)

Now please bear in mind this shows just a small cross-section of what I own or have read, please feel free to mention books as well. Some of what is listed may be apart of a series if this is the case I have the series as well. I also tend to purchase Authors, and will read everything they write. I have done this with the above-mentioned list as well.

So to have a book review once or twice a month or not and should I keep it strictly to what relates directly to the Idea of Libertarianism or not?
