| Richmond Memorial Library book reviews: 'Hershel and the Hanukkah ... - Examiner Posted: 11 Dec 2009 03:20 AM PST When Hershel of Ostropol comes to the small (and presumably Russian) village on the first night of Hanukkah, he expects to find warmth and celebration. Alas, the residents of this town cannot celebrate Hanukkah. The goblins haunting the nearby abandoned Synagogue despise this holiday, and they wreak havoc on anyone in the village who tries to light so much as one Hanukkah candle! Brave soul that he is, Hershel decides to spend all 8 nights of Hanukkah in the Synagogue. His goal: to outsmart the goblins and to free the villagers from their curse. But this won't be easy. In order for the goblins' curse to be lifted, the King of Goblins himself must light all 8 candles on the menorah on the final night. Clever Hershel will definitely have to put his imagination to work on this one. All alone in the bleak Synagogue, Hershel is visited by goblins of many shapes and sizes and outsmarts each one in a unique way. But when the time comes, will he be able to match wits against the King of the Goblins? Noted author and folklorist Eric Kimmel (if interested in fiction of more regional significance, see review of Kimmel's "The Erie Canal Pirates") draws upon his Jewish heritage to give readers an exciting story about courage, persistence, and light that never dies (symbolized, at the end, by the menorah candles). Trina Schart Hyman's illustrations add beautifully to Kimmel's text with their dark colors, realistic treatment of facial features, and skillfully imaginative portrayals of the different goblins Hershel meets. "Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins" is currently on display with Hanukkah and Kwanzaa JE books in the Richmond Memorial Library Children's Room. Most suitable for students in grades 1-3. fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger |
